The Best Camping Fans of 2017

Going out to camp in a humid day? The sunny weather looks great because we all hate chilly nights and we don’t have to worry about insulation and the extra job of keeping the tent warm.

Yes, it’s all good until we resign to our tents to rest and we can’t stop sweating. It’s like hell inside the tent! Have anyone experienced this? It ruins the supposedly “chill camping trip”. What we’re missing is a camping fan. Worry not because we’re here to give you a review of the Best Camping Fans of 2017!

I should’ve added a camping fan to my camping checklist a long time ago. It’s perfect for cooling down after long hikes and other sure-sweat activities, and most importantly, camping fans make a good night’s sleep!

What Makes An Ideal Camping Fan?

You might ask, “Can I just bring my desk fan or table fan?” technically, you can. But remember, in the great outdoors, you won’t always camp at established campgrounds.

Most often than not, we find ourselves setting up camp in isolated trails and forests where there is no electricity. That’s where camping fans come in handy. You don’t need a power inlet for it to work.

Camping fans come in all forms, making it slightly hard to choose just one.

An ideal camping fan should be light, lasts longs, and runs quietly

With regards to a power source, we have battery-operated ones and re-chargeable ones.

Moreover, camping fans have evolved so much from its standard form – the floor fan (which is still a favorite of campers) to the more high-tech ones which can be hung on the ceiling of the tent.

So, what features should a camping fan have for it to be ideal and convenient? Here are my suggestions:

  • Camping fans should be lightweight so that you can stash it in your backpack without breaking your back while carrying it.
  • If you’re going for a battery-operated one, choose one that has a compartment for 3-4 batteries – the more batteries, the longer it will last. But if you’ll only camp for just a day or if the weather’s a bit cold already and you’re only bringing it for emergency, a few batteries would work just fine.
  • These portable fans have different settings, airflow capacities, and modes. Some have quicker airflow, while some don’t. It will boil down to your preference and convenience.
  • Choose one that runs quietly. A noisy fan always bothers me when sleeping. Fan blades generate the noise. Fans with metal blades are usually the loud type whereas those with plastic, sickle-shaped blades run the most quietly.
  • Now, this next feature is a bonus. Nowadays, most camping fans come with built-in LED lights which give sufficient lighting inside the tent when it’s dark outside.

1. Image Portable LED Camping Lantern with Ceiling Fan

As I was saying, portable camping fans with built-in LED lights are very functional as they do two jobs at once – ventilation and lighting. The Image Portable LED Camping Lantern with Ceiling Fan is one of the top-rated camping fans in the market.

The fan runs on 2 D-cell batteries, has 18 LED bulbs which provide ample lighting, two fan modes – slow and fast, two light modes – on and off, a 360-degree rotation angle, top hook, and a foldable stand to shift from a hanging fan to a sitting fan in an instant.

Lastly, this fan includes notable hinges which let you move the fan out of the LED ring which surrounds it.

I got hyped up to purchase this fan because of the positive reviews. I wasn’t expecting much because I think it’s too small but upon trying this fan, I was amazed at how quiet its rotation is.

The fan’s running time is also quite good as it lasted for about 20 hours (2 nights) on a high setting, which by the way, is very cool from 6 to 7 feet away (note that we tried this on a 2-person tent).

But what made me fall in love with this fan is it components (fan and LED ring) can be separated, giving you the option of pointing the lights and the fan in opposite directions. Unique, isn’t it?

Pros

  • Well built & durable – solid construction
  • Bright lighting
  • Lightweight
  • Versatile (can be shifted from a ceiling fan, a desk/floor fan to a handheld fan)
  • The air movement settings are good (lets you move from a faint breeze to a cool one)
  • Quiet rotation

Cons

  • During scorching and humid days, the air circulation of the high setting might not be adequate for some people
  • Works best for a 2-person tent. It’s too small to keep air flowing in bigger tents
  • Might not last long enough for a half-week long camping session

2. BicycleStore 3 in 1 Multi-function Portable Mini Fan

This next one on our list is a lightweight multi-functional all-around camping fan. Oh, it’s not only a camping fan – it’s a table lamp and a spotlight torch too. What more do you need for a good night’s sleep?

This lamp needs to be charged for it to work. It has two chargers- a solar panel and one for the fan and torch. The adjustable lamp lets you aim the light in a particular direction. If you need a flashlight, you can just use the torch light on the side.

With regards to the fan, it has three-speed controls with variable wind circulations, and it lasts up to 2-4 hours depending on your usage – whether you use the fan alone or simultaneously with the lights.

Pros

  • Well built & durable – solid construction
  • Multi-functional
  • Bright lighting
  • Lightweight
  • Quiet rotation

Cons

  • Faint air circulation even at high fan setting
  • Battery drains fast when you use the fan, torch, and LED lights simultaneously
  • Works best for a 2-person tent. It’s too small to keep air flowing in bigger tents
  • Might not last long enough for a half-week long camping session

3. 02COOL 10” Battery or Electric Portable Fan

If you’re looking for a portable camping fan that can also double as a home fan, opt for the 02COOL 10” Battery or Electric Portable Fan.

By “doubling effect”, I meant that this fan has two power sources – battery and electricity, which makes it perfect for use at outdoors and at home. Moreover, the fan's lightweight, has a compact design, a stable horseshoe base, hinges for tilting, and has two settings – high and low.

So this piece rotates quietly, has a very stable base for standing or tilting, and its battery life runs for a long time. It operates on 4 D-cell batteries which last for approximately 40 hours.

Yes, 40 hours of coolness inside the tent. Very useful indeed! In the case where the battery runs out, this fan has an AC adapter for plugging into a nearby electric outlet.

4. O2COOL 5-Inch Portable Fan

Bearing a huge resemblance to its 02COOL Electric/Portable Fan brother, the 02COOL 5” Portable Fan is a smaller and more compact version of the 10” version. This fan is perfect for kids!

Aside from the quiet rotation, compact design, high and low air settings, and tilting capacity of the fan, it only uses 2 D-cell batteries which is a downside for me. Having only 2 D-cells cuts the power time to more or less 20 hours. Well, we can’t complain because the fan’s too small to have a lot of batteries.

But to compensate for that, 02COOL added a USB cord for charging near the power button which will let you use the fan when connected to a computer or a mobile device as source of energy. The air flow is not bad but the design of the fan limits its usage for a single person only.

I bought my son this specific camping fan for his school camp and said it works fine. Its small structure made it easy for him to carry and store and the hinges of the fan are very sturdy, making it okay to tilt it as frequently as you like.

Pros

  • Well built & durable – solid construction
  • Lightweight
  • Quiet rotation
  • Long enough power time
  • Compact design – easy to carry and store in small spaces

Cons

  • The air movement settings are not that strong (faint and slightly slow)
  • Might not last long enough for a half-week long camping session
  • Too small – won’t work well even in small tents
  • Works best for a single person use only

5. Coleman CPX 6 Lighted Tent Fan with Stand

best camping fan

Via Amazon.com

The Coleman CPX 6 Lighted Tent Fan with Stand is another great camping fan on the list. It’s Coleman guys, the frontrunner of camping gears, so expect this fan to be a reliable and durable one.

Its features include a battery cartridge, five bright LED lights (normal and night light settings), magnetic plate and a carabineer clip to attach it to the tent’s ceiling, two switches for fan and light, and a naked structure – no fan screens.

The air this fan produces is quite good, considering its diminutive size. Also, the blades are soft and flexible, so the naked structure of the fan doesn’t have any bearing because if you accidentally stuck your finger on the rotating blades, the blades won’t cut your finger. Very kid-friendly, eh?

The lighting system of this fan is pretty unique and thoughtful. You can shift from an ordinary light which is a bright yellow to a night light which dims to a soft red hue – perfect for a semi-lighted dark ambiance in the camp.

With regards to the power source, this fan doesn’t only run on 4 D-cell batteries, but it can also work on a rechargeable power cartridge and an A/C adapter which are bought separately.

Pros

  • Well built & durable – solid construction
  • Bright lighting
  • Lightweight
  • Versatile (can be shifted from a ceiling fan, a desk/floor fan to a handheld fan)
  • Power lasts longer than most portable fans
  • The air movement settings are good (lets you shift from a faint breeze to a cool one)
  • Quiet rotation
  • Easy to clean
  • Kid-friendly (dull blades)

Cons

  • During scorching and humid days, the air circulation of the high setting might not be adequate for some people
  • Might not last long enough for a half-week long camping session

With its well-built construction and design (especially the normal and night lights), long battery life, sufficient air circulation for a small tent, quiet rotation, and lightweightness, it exceeded all the other camping fans in the list (and also my expectations).
