dutch oven pizza

Hearing the wonderful word “pizza” makes me crave for that oh-so-cheesy and meaty crust every time. It is sooo delectable! Fortunately, I’ll be demonstrating how to make a Dutch oven pizza for camping in this article.

Okay, so I’m not sure if I just wanted to share with you our Dutch oven pizza recipe for your future reference or if I’m just really craving for it right now and I thought I’d put it into writing to add to my blog. Well, I guess both works! Hehe.

The Dutch oven pizza recipe is a favorite of campers and non-campers alike. I mean, who doesn’t go crazy for pizza? Although at first, you’ll ask “how the hell can I make pizza outdoors without any oven?”

Of course, you can! Remember, any type of pizza or dishes you make at home, you can certainly recreate with a Dutch oven. Name a dish or even a warm dessert, the Dutch oven can surely cook it.

So I made this recipe numerous times, usually when I’m with my family because they all love pizza. Of course, you can still cook it for yourself if you’re riding solo or enjoy with your camping buddies. Pizza’s great anytime and anywhere especially out in the great outdoors. The Dutch oven pizza’s easy to prepare and cook. It will get consumed pretty fast by starving campers too.

Are you ready? Let’s start!

What You’ll Need

  • Olive oil/vegetable oil
  • 1 tube of pizza crust/1 box pizza dough mix
  • 1 small can tomato sauce
  • 1 small can olive
  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1 tsp. salt and pepper
  • 1 big white onion, sliced
  • ½ lb pepperoni
  • 1 bell pepper, sliced
  • 1 small can mushroom
  • ½ tsp basil
  • ½ tsp paprika
  • 1 aluminum tin (circular tin used for pies)

Serving Size: Makes a 12-inch pizza (depending on the size of your Dutch oven); Serves 3-4 persons

Procedure

Step 1

Pre-slice the vegetables to lessen the work on the site and to save up space. Slice the bell pepper, mushroom, and white onion. Put the sliced ingredients in a ziplock bag or a small Tupperware. Refrigerate everything, including the other fresh ingredients the night before camping.

If you’ll be camping out the whole day and plan to have the pizza for dinner, put the ingredients in a camping cooler to avoid spoilage.

Step 2

Pour the tube of pizza crust or pizza dough mix in the aluminum tin. Spread dough evenly in the center and sides of the tin.

Step 3

Spread tomato sauce on top of the dough, covering the entire area. Sprinkle salt, pepper, basil, paprika, and other spices you want to include on the sauced-up dough. Add sliced onions, olive, mushrooms, bell pepper, and pepperoni.

Step 4

Prepare the oven before putting the aluminum tin with pizza. To do this, you’ll need briquette charcoals or a portable cooking stove. But first, spray or pour olive or vegetable oil on the sides of the oven.

If you’ll use coals, put 12 pieces on top of the oven’s lid and 20 on the bottom of the pot. For a portable stove, set the oven to medium heat or about 350 degrees. After you’re done preparing the oven, place the tin inside the oiled Dutch oven.

Step 5

Cook for about 30-40 minutes. Lift the lid after the designated time and distribute the cheese on top. The cheesier, the better! Place the lid again and cook for an additional 5 to 10 minutes.

Step 6

Open the lid and check for the doneness of the dough. Stick a fork or a toothpick and check if the crust is crispy and soft. Also, the cheese should be fully melted.

If all of the things mentioned are met, remove coals on top and from the bottom of the oven and carefully pull the tin out of the oven. If not, place the lid back again and cook for 5 to 10 minutes.

Voila! Now you have the best-tasting pizza in the world!

Truly, pizza will bring everyone in the camp to sit together and eat. Everyone loves it and it’s something you can’ say no to. The Dutch oven pizza is easy to cook and prepare. No hassle! You won’t even have to wash the dishes because everyone would scoop out a slice with their bare hands they won’t even think of using a plate. Try the recipe and surprise your fellow campers and family with a pizza party the next time you camp out.
